The jury is barking up the wrong tree. The only people they harm by awarding such unreasonable awards is the average American Citizen. Now this $100M has to come from somewhere. Lets pretend the FBI has to absorb it. So they cut some agents or slack on some investigations to make up the cash. Then when something bad happens that could have been prevented, had the monies been available, who is at fault? Way to go jury. What would be super ironic is that the members of the jury all lived in the same town and some disaster took place in that town because their local FBI Office was shorted $100M in their budget. That'd be cool.

Kunta Says:

1) I don't know the legal issues involved in making the individuals liable. Suing the government is always a dicey proposition.

2) It's not that I prefer government funds to go to wrongfully imprisoned individuals, I'd just assume have NO wrongfully imprisoned individuals. But since mistakes get made (or are created by criminal activity) some kind of compensation should be paid. Is $100M the right number? No, I don't think so. The jury is trying to send a message to the FBI (something like "Hey FBI don't tamper with evidence or coach witnesses, that just ain't cool")

the real question here is why doesn't the justice department police it's own? If these FBI schmucks were already in prison, there would be no need to extract 100M from them. Simply pay some kind of compensation to the wrongfully imprisoned and move on.

But, it seems no one in government (particularily this government) is interested in doing the right thing. So it's up to juries to do the work of the justice department.

The verdict is still good in my book.

1) The government should be liable, the individuals who did the framing should be criminally liable.

2) See above. Why do my taxes go to pay this schmuck? Lets see Kunta would rather government monies go to pay these guys rather than feed the poor, provide medical coverage, etc.. I bet if the choice were set aside $5B to do social programs or use that money to pay off people like this he'd rather 10 people get $5B than millions enjoy the benefits of that money.

VIZZLE:

There should be no liability. Going to work in a "War Zone" has implied risks and rewards. I am sure these guys were paid very well for accepting a dangerous mission. Should people that work in the forest be able to sue because they get a mosquito bite? Or if a bear attacks them? The USA is in a "war on terror" and as such these deaths, however unfortunate, are results of acts of terrorism and should be treated as such : it's no one's fault.

This country seems to think that everything bad that happens to them should result in millions of dollars. I burned myself with hot coffee, so I should make a million dollars, someone lost my favorite pants, so I should make $64 million dollars, need I continue?
